Sunak highlights “promising signs economy is recovering

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has said there were some “promising signs” that the country’s economy was recovering from its record economic crash during the coronavirus lockdown which was announced earlier today.

Sunak said growth of 8.7% in gross domestic product in June was encouraging, even as official data showed the economy contracted by 20.4% in the second quarter as a whole.

Sunak told broadcasters there was too much uncertainty to know if Britain would have a swift, V-shaped economic recovery.

“What we do know is that there are promising signs,” he said. “There’s still work to do and even as we recover many people are going to lose their jobs, already have lost their jobs, and we need to make sure that we are constantly focused on providing new opportunities for those people.”

NY Times promotes Patil to post of senior social editor

Anushka Patil

Anushka Patil has been promoted to the post of senior social editor at the New York Times.

Patil will continue to work closely with Audience Product to develop reader-facing products that attract and retain new audiences and to work on internal tools to help the social team do their work better.

Previously, Patil was working as a news curation editor at BuzzFeed News and before that she was a social media intern at the company. She has also served as a junior analyst/content and SEO at Perfect Search Media.

Patil was also a fellow at Northwestern University Knight Lab and has held the posts of assistant web designer and news and engagement intern at Northwestern University and Reverb Technologies, respectively.

Patil is a graduate of Northwestern University with a degree in journalism and computer science.
